Summer Shows – Where are They?

Longmire, The Bridge, Major Crimes, Rizzoli & Isles … those are just a few of the one-hour dramas that have returned for the summer. There’s a list of new shows that will be joining those in the coming weeks. . . you should be checking to see if you have room on your DVR.

And there are some that won’t be returning. One that I guessed wouldn’t be coming back, even as I watched the season finale was The Glades. In case you don’t remember (spoiler alert) Matt Passmore was “killed” in every sense of the word, on his wedding day.

You can see him in his new USA Network drama Satisfaction coming up July 17. Kiele Sanchez moved on to the new DirecTV drama Navy St. 

The Bridge on FX has a new showrunner, which is probably a good thing. It lost it’s way slightly toward the end of the first season. The new season begins Wednesday, July 9. It is set in and filmed in El-Paso, Texas.

Major Crimes on TNT is two episodes into its new season and promises to be just as gutsy and thought provoking as its two previous seasons. Jon Tenney will make some recurring appearances this season as Agent Fritz Howard and Tom Berenger will again guest star as Capt. Raydor’s estranged husband.

Rizzoli & Isles is one episode into its fifth season and will use the second episode to dramatically say goodbye to Lee Thompson Young (Det. Barry Frost), the actor who committed suicide in 2013.

Longmire on A&E has picked up where it left off, with Henry Standing Bear in jail and Branch recovering from being shot. Ever wonder how they get everything “right?”

In episode 3, Henry asks Walt to sit in as a judge at the Miss Cheyenne pageant, which is interesting as all hell. Hulu has a 6 minute web exclusive video about The Cheyenne World and Marcus Red Thunder, who is the advisor to the show.

Shows are always better when they do their homework, and Longmire would never be accused of not staying up all night studying. It’s one show that makes coming in the house on a summer evening worth it.

Penny Dreadful is Wunderbar on Showtime

I adore Josh Hartnett. Even when he’s in something I don’t like, I still watch it because he’s in it. For example, I didn’t really like The Black Dahlia, but I watched it because he was in it.

He’s currently appearing in Penny Dreadful, a new series on Showtime. But I’d watch that even if Josh Hartnett wasn’t in it, that’s how good it is. It also stars Timothy Dalton, Eva Green and Harry Treadaway; but the cast will be growing as more episodes are shown.

It premiered on Sunday, May 11 at 10pm ET, but you can catch the first episode anytime at http://www.sho.com. You can also see it at http://www.huluplus.com if you have a huluplus.com account.

Once you view the first episode and get introduced to some of the iconic characters in Showtime’s reinvented Victorian London you’ll understand what I mean about wanting to catch the entire series. Showtime recently had a free preview weekend on DirecTV and they had a BTS (behind the scenes) on it. There’s an extremely committed and dedicated, talented cast bringing each episode to the screen. Those are the kind of programs I enjoy watching.

The nice thing about premium series is that if you miss one episode at its premiere showing, you can catch it at other times throughout the week. That helps tremendously if you have over committed your DVR as well.

A “Second Revolution” In Television

This is an extremely interesting and important article you should take the time to read. It explains the importance Hulu, Netflix and other up and coming streaming services will play in your television watching future.

I personally still use Hulu to get caught up on some television shows but I never could see the advantages of Hulu Plus. Then I discovered Roku. I personally don’t use a Roku, but people who do say it’s the only way to stream and watch television (see the screen capture at the end of the page).

I use to have both streaming and mail delivery Netflix but that was because I would “listen” to Netflix at work. Now I just have mail delivery Netflix. The nice thing about Netflix, even now, as mentioned in the article above … “At the start of every season, Netflix releases all of a show’s episodes simultaneously. The move is a nod to the binge habits of its members, Netflix says, who prefer to see an entire season in a few sittings as opposed to tuning in for the latest episode at a particular time every week …” which was me and in some cases, still is me in a nutshell.

At this very moment I’m banking my A&E Hoarders episodes on my bedroom DVR because I HAVE TO WATCH them during my Thanksgiving vacation from work. I’m also saving up my FX’s AHS: Asylum episodes on my HD DVR for my vacation Christmas/New Year’s and I banked a bunch of shows during August, September and October so I could zap through the … yep, you guessed it … the constant political commercials (I am so glad that’s over).
