‘The Voice’: New Coaches For Season 4

‘The Voice’: New Coaches And Season 4 Talent Preview (VIDEO).

NBC’s The Voice premieres this Monday with a two-hour episode followed by a one-hour episode on Tuesday, March 26.

On April 30 and May 7 the show will again feature a two-hour episode. Struggling in ratings, NBC is hoping The Voice will provide a boost.

The two new coaches, I’m predicting, may be just what NBC need to increase ratings. Usher is filling in for CeeLo Green and Shakira is filling in for Christina Aguilera. Both CeeLo and Christina are taking breaks from The Voice to focus on their own projects.

Personally, it will be nice to have two new coaches added to the mix. I was always one to believe that a change in cast wasn’t all bad.

How long have you been watching The Walking Dead? Just the third Season? All three Seasons?

Have  you noticed how “other” press coverage on The Walking Dead, the stars and other aspects of the series has picked up 10-fold?

I just saw Laurie Holden on Ellen early last week. In mid-February, I attended a live show with 3 cast members and Greg Nicotero. USA Today recently had a half page article about The Walking Dead women being stronger than the men.

If you hit the link above, you’ll read an interview conducted by David Carr, who writes the Media Equation for Business Day Media & Advertising for The New York Times, of Josh Sapan the Chief of AMC Network. Mr. Sapan has been with AMC for 25 years, and shares why, after 3 seasons, the success of TWD has finally come to fruition.

Mr. Carr squeezes a ton of facts about The Walking Dead (TWD) in this article – all of them complimentary: TWD was the highest-rated show … during its run last fall; 3-weeks ago TWD owned Sunday night; The Talking Dead drew almost 2.8 million viewers … trumping NBC for all of February.

And NBC should be a little pissed about that because TWD was actually NBC’s for the asking in 2011, as reported in the NYTimes.com article (just hit the link above and read about for yourself).

Monday night’s The Voice opens with the entire cast of Season 3, including Carson Daly and Christina Milian standing on the stage lit with candles. Each member is holding placards with the names and ages of the victims of the Sandy Hill Elementary school shooting. They sing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah (one of my favorite songs).

If you want to see this, you may have to look hard for it. NBC isn’t showing it any longer and the only way I got to see it was because it was in my Hulu que and I know it’s on my DVR.

The Voice is now down to 3, yes three contestants. Only one of my final four, Terry McDermott, is still in the running. From the article (link) here, they’re predicting that Cassadee Pope will be the first female winner of The Voice.

According to the iTunes Top Singles, Terry McDermott’s single Broken Wings is #5 and Cassadee Pope’s single Cry is #1. In votes, she is beating Terry McDermott’s butt by the thousands. So I’m inclined to believe that she will be the first female winner of The Voice and that Blake will be a repeat winning coach. How exciting!

2012-13 DVR Hits Tipping Point

Almost 46 percent of all households now own a DVR, up 4% from last year. We now watch less “live” TV, but more programming, thanks to DVRs (digital video recorders).

Younger viewers have been setting their own schedules via streaming, ondemand, delayed and what they have on their DVR, but new and returning shows “are adding significant audiences as nearly 46 percent of U.S. households now have a DVR (up from 42 percent last season)” according to The Hollywood Reporter 10.19.12.

From a February 29, 2012 Nielsen Wire article some old school and new school statistics dating back to 1960:

Then (1960): 7% of households received cable.
Then (1990): 56% received cable and 66% owned a VCR.
Then (2006): 89% of TV content is viewed live.

  • DVR usage accounts for 1.6% of our TV time.

Today:

  • 98% of homes own a TV and most have some kind of device hooked up to their television.
  • 85% of TV content is viewed live.
  • DVR usage accounts for 8% of our TV time.

With the increase of DVRs in viewer’s homes, episodes and series are now “scored” in a new way. For example, the second episode of NBC’s Revolution jumped more than 50% to a 5.2 rating among adults 18-49 with three days of delayed viewing (according to The Hollywood Reporter 10.19.12).

If you look at Nielsen, who has been providing timely information on media and consumer trends on TV since 1950 (radio since 1930) their “source” states: Live viewing and DVR playback on the Same Day, defined as 3am-3am. Ratings are the percentage of TV homes in the U.S. tuned into television.

But the whole point of having a DVR is to watch a show when it’s convenient for you. Copper on BBC America comes on at 9pm CST on Sunday I’m fast asleep by then. Since it’s on DVR I’m not that much in a hurry to watch it, but because I really enjoy the show and love Tom Weston-Jones, I sit down on Monday night and watch it.

DISH’s new “Hopper” aka the commercial-killer was the talk of the cable show in Boston in late May this year. While the Hopper’s automatic ad-skipping is limited to recorded broadcast TV for now, cable networks and distributors said it was a worrisome development.

I really don’t enjoy “pressing” articles from other news sources, but I find that The Hollywood Reporter is far less “sensational” as some. I came across this particular article when I was on imdb.com this afternoon (Friday, Oct. 12).

I find in interesting that Mitt Romney has again found himself with his foot in his mouth once again.

It’s an interesting read.
